Looking Into The Lowell Boat Shop - Amesbury, MA

Photos from the Banks Dory Spring launch.

Using plans and historic patterns, students will build one 17' Banks Dory using traditional methods. The class will build the dory from start to finish with the students taking part in every step of the process. The class concludes with a launch (once the ice is out of the river!).

At the conclusion of the class, one of the class members is chosen by raffle to take the dory home.

Established in 1793, Lowell's Boat Shop is the oldest continuously operating boat shop in America and is cited as the birthplace of the legendary fishing dory. Located on the North bank of the Merrimack River, skilled craftsmen continue to build wooden boats in the Lowell tradition on the property purchased by founder Simeon Lowell in the 1700s.
